For the price, this item works great. It is not a detector that sniffs the air for readings like the long probes you see energy companies have. It is a smaller device that works well for testing for natural gas leaks at the source. This means you must hold it gently against an area that you want to check for a moment. It is great for checking around valves or other seals that could leak gas such as your water heater tubes or gas stove.
I had a 1lb propane tank shut off and it was able to detect residual propane on the tip of it, which is what Xcel energy did one time with their probes in front of me, so if it can catch that, it likely will catch other non-smelling leaks, but you must go slow around the areas you are testing and also turn the S on for sensitive.
This pin size detector though small, is very versatile and detecs gas leaks from a wide variety of natural gas appliances. I am the director of facilitiesfor a 30,000 square foot property that is gas supplied For all our appliances. A must have!!!
This device does require a 30 second zero level calibration each time you turn it on. I used it to detect and pinpoint a natural gas leak around the gas valve controller on my water heater. Very easy to use and was very effective. The display and audible alarm quickly reveal how much gas is being detected. I thought the price was good too.
